Holy Island, Lough Allen, Drumshanbo
This shoreline on Lough Allen provides outstanding fishing during April and May when bream and hybrids gather in the shallow water before spawning. For the rest of the year sport is consistently good, especially for hybrids, roach and odd tench, but at its best whenever there is a good onshore wind. Don’t be put off by the shallow water. If lake levels drop in summer, a great way to catch fish is casting into the deep boat channel with a waggler and maggot.
Species: Bream, roach, hybrids, tench, pike and perch
Best baits: Worm, caster, maggot and corn
Popular methods: Feeder fishing is probably best but the fish will come on to the pole line when there is an onshore blow
Local tackle shop: Tooman’s Tackle, Carrick-on-Shannon
Access: It is possible to drive along the water’s edge in normal conditions Directions: Leave Drumshanbo on the Sligo road and about 1.5 miles out there is a signpost on the right for Holy Island and follow the track until it reaches the lake.
