Angling in Monaghan

County Monaghan is the most underrated angling holiday centre in Ireland. There are lakes of all shapes and sizes offering fishing to suit everyone from waters famous for specimen bream, ponds that are loaded with brightly coloured rudd, tons of tench, vast lakes alive with roach and hybrids – you name it and it’s here.   Carrickmacross is one of Ireland’s most complete coarse angling holiday destinations. The lively market town has enough restaurants, pubs and shop, to satisfy all tastes and pockets, but most important of all, it has great fishing on a prolific range of waters from small lakes to vast loughs up to three miles long. Bream of 11lb and roach topping 2lb are a feature on several waters.

Castleblayney’s Lough Muckno is a long-standing attraction capable of terrific sport, whether it is pole fishing for roach or chucking a groundbait feeder 40 metres for black-backed bream. The massive lake also has a reputation for superior pike fishing with plenty taking the scales around the 25lb mark.   Ballybay is based on the Dromore River system that runs through several prolific lakes, namely Major, Baird’s Shore, White Lake and Corravoo.
